In this article, the authors present a new definition for the essential numerical range \(W_e(T)\) of an unbounded operator \(T\) defined on a separable infinite-dimensional Hilbert space, and study various analytic and geometric properties of \(W_e(T)\). They obtain the relationship between the essential numerical range and the convex hull of essential spectrum. Further, they introduce the notion of limiting essential numerical range for a sequence of operators which is even new for the bounded case, and study the conditions under which it coincides with the essential numerical range of the operator approximated by projection and/or domain truncation methods. They also explore various relations between the essential numerical range and spectral pollution through the concept of limiting essential numerical range.
