Let \(k\) be an algebraically closed field of characteristic \(p\geq 3\) and let \(A\) be an abelian surface defined over \(k\). In this article the author studies \(\text{NS}(A)\), the Néron-Severi group of \(A\), and its relation to the Chern class map \(\text{c}_1 : \text{NS}(A)/p \text{NS}(A) \rightarrow H^1(A,\Omega_A^1)\). In particular, the author determines the structure of \(\text{NS}(E \times E)\), for \(E\) a supersingular elliptic curve, and then uses this result to study the Chern class map \(\text{c}_1:\text{NS}(A)/p\text{NS}(A) \rightarrow H^1(A,\Omega_A)\). This map is shown to be injective if and only if \(A\) is not isomorphic to the product of two supersingular elliptic curves. In the case that \(A\) is isomorphic to the product of two supersingular elliptic curves, the kernel of \(\text{c}_1\) is determined explicitly.
