The paper is an exposition of the method of studying general classes of boundary value problems based on abstract Green formulas containing abstract versions of the trace mapping and normal derivative. Such formulas were suggested by \textit{J.-P. Aubin} [Approximation of elliptic boundary-value problems. New York etc.: Wiley- Interscience a division of John Wiley \& Sons, Inc. (1972; Zbl 0248.65063)] and [\textit{N. D. Kopachevskiĭ} et al., Операторные методы в линейной гидродинамике. Ѐволюционные и спектральные задачи (Russian). Moskva: Nauka (1989; Zbl 0681.76001)]. They should not be confused with other abstract Green formulas used in extension theory of symmetric operators and its generalizations; see [\textit{J. Behrndt} et al., Boundary value problems, Weyl functions, and differential operators. Basel: Birkhäuser (2020; Zbl 1457.47001)]. The specific applications considered by the authors are to conjunction problems for the Laplacian in composite domains. The related spectral problems are reduced to operator pencils with selfadjoint operator coefficients depending on two parameters.
