A Hom-Lie algebra is a family \((A,\alpha,[-,-])\) where \(A\) is a vector space, \(\alpha\) an endomorphism of \(A\) and \([-,-]\) an antisymmetric product on \(A\) such that \[ [\alpha(x), [y,z]]+[\alpha(y), [z,x]]+[\alpha(z), [x,y]]=0.\] The cohomology theory of these objects was defined by Y. Sheng. In this paper, links between derivations, abelian extentions and crossed modules and the first cohomology groups are studied, generalizing classical results on Lie algebras. A notion of \(\alpha\)-derivation and \(\alpha\)-abelian extensions are defined, and to each short exact sequences of Hom-Lie algebra is associated a five-terms exact sequence involving \(\alpha\)-derivations and second cohomology groups. It is shown there exists a canonical map from equivalence classes of \(\alpha\)-crossed extensions to the third cohomology group is defined, giving a partial generalization of a classical result for Lie algebras.
