This paper establishes general conditions under which one can extend a model structure to one with more weak equivalences but fewer cofibrations and fibrations. The theorems take the following general form. Let \((W, C, F)\) be, respectively, the weak equivalences, cofibrations, and fibrations of a model structure on a finitely bicomplete category \(\mathcal{M}\). Let \((W', C', F')\) be three classes of morphisms such that \(W \subset W'\), \(C' \subset C\), and \(F' \subset F\). Under certain general conditions the triple \((W', C', F')\) provides a model structure on \(\mathcal{M}\). The paper includes a number of variant statements related to duals, cofibrant generation, and (right) properness. The main theorems generalize and formalize model structure existence results including those for resolution model structures [\textit{A. K. Bousfield}, Geom. Topol. 7, 1001--1053 (2003; Zbl 1065.55012)] and left Bousfield localization model structures [\textit{M. Hovey}, Model categories. Mathematical Surveys and Monographs. 63. Providence, RI: American Mathematical Society (1999; Zbl 0909.55001)], [\textit{P. S. Hirschhorn}, Model categories and their localizations. Providence, RI: American Mathematical Society (AMS) (2003; Zbl 1017.55001)]. The final section gives an application to enrichment over a closed monoidal model category \(\mathcal{V}\). The theorem gives conditions on \(\mathcal{V}\) which ensure that the category \(\mathcal{V}\mathrm{-Cat}\) of \(\mathcal{V}\)-categories has a right proper model structure extending the fibered model structure of [\textit{A. E. Stanculescu}, Appl. Categ. Struct. 20, No. 1, 19--30 (2012; Zbl 1252.18020)]. Note: The term ``less'' is used throughout, often where ``fewer'' is the grammatically standard term. This has no bearing on the mathematics.
