Let \(A_n\), \(n\in\mathbb N\), be Lebesgue measurable subsets of \([0,1]\), \(c>0\) and \(\lambda (A_n)=c\) for all \(n\in\mathbb N\) where \(\lambda\) denotes the Lebesgue measure. It is shown that there exists a subsequence of \(A_n\) whose intersection has positive measure if and only if there exists a subsequence of \(\chi_{A_n}\) converging weakly in \(L^1\) to a function which is \(1\) on a set of positive measure.
