When solving inverse problems for differential equations, it is often formulated as an optimization problem in the spirit of Tikhonov regularization, and then minimized by gradient descent type techniques. The differentiality of the objective function plays a crucial role. In this work, the author analyzes Fréchet differentiability for a class of coefficient inverse problems, and gives sufficient conditions for the existence of arbitrarily order differentials, and the formulae for first- and second-order derivatives. The author illustrates the theory with two geophysical inverse problems.
