The main topic of the paper is the connection between quantum information theory and the theory of operator spaces. The authors investigate the separability problem, and show two approaches to the problem using operator spaces and operator systems, respectively. In quantum information theory one considers various notions connected with the ``degree of entanglement'' of a pure state, measured by the so called Schmidt rank of the state. These include the notion of \(k\)-block positive operators and a family of operator norms depending on the Schmidt rank. The authors show, among other things, that the same sequence of norms defines the structures of \(k\)-minimal operator spaces. A similar connection is established for norms in \(k\)-super minimal operator systems. The last section is devoted to the investigation of completely bounded versions of the \(k\)-minimal operator space norms and \(k\)-super minimal operator system norms.
