J. H. Conway et. al compiled the character tables of all the sporadic simple groups [in \textit{J. H. Conway, R. T. Curtis, S. P. Norton, R. A. Parker, R. A. Wilson}, Atlas of finite groups. Maximal subgroups and ordinary characters for simple groups. Oxford: Clarendon Press (1985; Zbl 0568.20001)]. Since the character tables of the maximal subgroups of the sporadic simple groups are needed, it is important to find the character tables of these groups as well. The largest maximal subgroup of the Baby Monster \(B\) is a group of the shape \(2^{23}.Co_2\) where \(2^{23}\) is an extraspecial 2-group of positive type and the extension is non-split. In a fundamental paper by \textit{B. Fischer} [in Representation theory of finite groups and finite-dimensional algebras. Proc. Conf., Bielefeld/Ger. 1991, Prog. Math. 95, 1-16 (1991; Zbl 0804.20003)] a method for finding the character tables of group extensions is described. This method involves certain matrices which are called Clifford-Fischer matrices. The author of the present paper calculates the Clifford-Fischer matrices of the group \(2^{23}.Co_2\) at each conjugacy class of \(Co_2\) and then using certain matrix multiplication he completes the whole of the character table of this group.
