The classical Perron-Frobenius theorem states that the largest modulus of an eigenvalue is itself an eigenvalue and has a nonnegative eigenvector. Motivated by the study of positive systems of differential algebraic equations due mainly to \textit{R. Bru, C. Coll, S. Romero-Vivo}, and \textit{E. Sanchéz} [Proceedings of the first multidisciplinary international symposium on positive systems: Theory and applications (POSTA 2003), Rome, Italy, August 28--30, 2003 (2003; Zbl 1060.93065)] and to \textit{T. Kaczorek} [Positive 1D and 2D systems (Communications and Control Engineering Series, Springer, London) (2002; Zbl 1005.68175)], this paper is largely based on the construction of projector chains in the way introduced by \textit{R. März} [Comput. Math. Appl. 31, No. 4--5, 121--135 (1996; Zbl 0880.34010)]. Given two square real matrices \(E,A\), a matrix pencil \(\lambda E-A\) is called regular if \(\det(\lambda E-A)\neq 0\), for some \(\lambda\in \mathbb{R}\). The authors provide a generalization of the Perron-Frobenius theorem for regular matrix pencils. Several examples are provided.
