This paper is devoted to the equivalence problem of hyperbolic equations \(u_{xt}=F(x,t,u,u_x,u_t)\). w.r.t. point transformations. A pseudogroup of point transformations preserving the set of the equations is considered. A scalar differential invariant of the action of this pseudogroup on these equations is calculated. In addition some invariant necessary conditions to reduce these equations to the linear form by point transformations are obtained. This invariant and the conditions are applied to obtain an explicit form of the equations linearized via point transformations. Furthermore the linearizing point transformation is represented. Examples illustrating the obtained results are considered.
