The authors show how the equivariant degree theory (see the book [Applied equivariant degree. AIMS Series on Differential Equations and Dynamical Systems 1. Springfield, MO: American Institute of Mathematical Sciences (2006; Zbl 1123.47043)] by the authors and \textit{H. Steinlein}) can be used to prove Hopf bifurcation in a symmetric system of delayed functional parabolic partial differential equations. The bifurcation invariant depends on equivariant spectral properties of the linearized system. Computations are done with a Maple package. This is demonstrated with a symmetric Hutchinson model of an ecosystem with \(n\) species in a heterogeneous environment.
