Starting from an \({\mathcal H}^n\)-rectifiable metric space \(Y\) and an arbitrary metric space \(X\), the author gives necessary and sufficient conditions on the image and pre-image of a Lipschitz map \(\varphi\) ensuring the validity of a coarea formula. The proof of the coarea formula is essentially based on the Euclidean notion of rectifiability of the metric space \(Y\) and uses the properties of metric differential \(MD(\varphi,\cdot)\) of the Lipschitz map \(\varphi\); the coarea formula is then given in terms of the local coarea factor \({\mathcal J}_k(MD(\varphi,\cdot))\). The proof of the results is based on what the author call a generalization of the implicit function theorem, that is rectifiability of almost all pre-images \(\varphi^{-1}(z)\), \(z\in X\).
