Let \(A\) be a noetherian commutative ring and \(S\) a graded algebra finitely generated over \(A\) by elements of degree one. Then one gets an epimorphism \(A[X]\to S\) where the \(X\)'s are variables, corresponding to the generators of (degree 1) \(S\). This in turn gives epimorphisms for any \(d\), \(A[T]\to S^{(d)}\) where \(T\) corresponds to the monomials of degree \(d\) in the \(X\)'s and \(S^{(d)}\) is the corresponding Veronese ring. The authors study the kernels of such maps.
