The authors characterize the classes of Orlicz spaces and Orlicz sequence spaces that satisfy upper or lower \(p\)-estimates with constant one. The authors also characterize the \(p\)-convexity and \(p\)-concavity with constant one in Orlicz spaces. Among the many results in this article, the authors prove that, if \(\varphi\) is an Orlicz function and \(\mu\) is an infinite nonatomic measure, then the Orlicz space \(L_\varphi\) satisfies an upper \(p\)-estimate with constant one if and only if \[ \frac{\varphi(au)}{\varphi(u)} + \frac{\varphi((1-a)v)}{\varphi(v)} \leq 1 \] for all \(u, v >0\) and \(0<a<1\). The authors also show that, if \(0<p<\infty\) and \(\varphi\) is an Orlicz function, then the Orlicz space on a nonatomic measure space is \(p\)-convex (respectively, \(p\)-concave) with constant one if and only if \(\varphi(u^{1/p})\) is convex (respectively, concave). The two theorems stated here are only representatives of the many interesting results in this article. It should be noted that the authors do not assume that the Orlicz function is convex.
