Generalizing the notions of sections, section convergence, AK spaces and of the \(\beta\)-dual \(E^\beta\) in sequence spaces \(E\), \textit{D.\,Noll} and \textit{W.\,Stadler} [Stud.\ Math.\ 94, No.\,2, 103--120 (1989; Zbl 0711.46004)] introduced the abstract concepts of a system of sections on a dual pairing \(\langle E,F\rangle\), of sectional convergence and (abstract) AK spaces, and of the (abstract) \(\beta\)-dual \(E^{\langle \beta\rangle}\) of \(E\). Using this general setting, they proved the following characterization of barrelledness (Theorem 1): Let \((E,\| ~\| )\) be a normed space with dual \(F\) and let a system of sections be fixed on \(\langle E,F\rangle\) such that \(F\) is an AK-space with respect to the dual norm topology. Then the following statements are equivalent: (1) \(E\) is barrelled. (2) Every \(E^{[n]}:= \{x^{[n]}: x\in E\}\), \(n\in\mathbb{N}\), is barrelled and \(E^{\langle \beta\rangle}=F\). (Here, \(x^{[n]}\) denotes the \(n\)-th (abstract) section of \(x\).) In the paper under review, the authors introduce `abstract' versions of the bounded uniform convergence property and of the \(0\)-gliding hump property. Corresponding to the result of D.\,Noll and W.\,Stadler, they state the following main result (Theorem 1): Let \((E,\| ~\| )\) be a normed space with dual \(F\) and a system of section mappings be fixed on \(\langle E,F\rangle,\) \(E\) be an (abstract) AK-space with respect to the norm topology. If either \(E\) has the bounded uniform convergence property, or the section mappings \(\{\rho_n\}\) have the \(0\)-gliding hump property with respect to the norm topology, then the following statements are equivalent: (1) \(E\) is barrelled. (2) Every \(E^{[n]}\), \(n\in\mathbb{N}\), is barrelled and \(E^{\langle \beta\rangle}=F\). Moreover, the authors show that this result is a strict generalization of the result of D.\,Noll and W.\,Stadler.
