An Enriques surface is called unnodal if it does not contain any smooth rational curve. The aim of this article is to compute the dimension of the Brill-Noether variety \(W^r_d(C)\), for ``small'' \(d\), when \(C\) is a smooth irreducible curve in a linear system \(| L|\) on an unnodal Enriques surface \(S\), associated to a line bundle \(L\). To state the main result, we need to introduce the numbers: \[ \phi(L)=\min\{L\cdot E\mid E\in \mathrm{Pic}(S), E^2=0, E\not\equiv 0\} \] where \(\equiv\) denotes numerical equivalence; \[ \mu(L)=\min\{L\cdot B-2\mid B\in \mathrm{Pic}(S), B \;\mathrm{effective}, B^2=4, \phi(B)=2, B\not\equiv L\}. \] Let \(k\) be the generic gonality of smooth curves in \(| L|\). Then the authors prove that, if \(L\) is ample with \(L^2\geq 2\) and such that \(k=2\phi(L)<\mu(L)\), then for \(k\leq d\leq g-k\) and \(C\) general in \(| L|\), \(\dim W^1_d(C)=d-k\). This theorem is related to a result of \textit{A. L. Knutsen} and \textit{A. F. Lopez}, who in [Math. Z. 261, No. 3, 659--690 (2009; Zbl 1161.14022)] proved that \(k=\min\{2\phi(L), \mu(L), \lfloor {L^2\over 4}\rfloor +2\}\). They also characterized the cases when \(k\neq 2\phi(L)\).
