This paper is concerned with the approximate solution of second order initial value problems (IVPs) that are written in the form: \( u''(t)+ w^2 u(t) = f(t, u(t), u'(t))\), \(t \in [0,T]\), \( u(0)=u_0, u'(0)=u'_0\) where \( w, T>0 \) are given constants, by means of several fixed point iterative methods. In the first part of the paper an alternative derivation of the so called variational iteration method by \textit{J.-H. He} [Int. J. Non-Linear Mech. 34, No.~4, 699--708 (1999; Zbl 1342.34005)] is given by using the Picard-Lindelöf technique employed in the proof of the existence and uniqueness solution for IVPs. In addition, under the assumption of the Lipschitz continuity of \(f(t,u,v)\) with respect to \(u\) and \(v\), several alternative fixed point iterative methods are proposed by writing the second order IVP as an equivalent system of two first order equations.
