For a Hilbert space \(H\), if \(T\) is a bounded and linear operator on \(H\), the (spatial) numerical range \(W(T)\) is defined by \[ W(T) := \Bigl\{ \langle Tx,x \rangle : x \in H, \| x \| = 1 \Bigr\}\;. \] If \(\varphi \) is a holomorphic mapping from the complex open unit disk into itself, the composition operator \(C_\varphi \) on the Hardy space \(H^2\) is given by \(C_\varphi (f) = f \circ \varphi \). For an element \(p\) in the complex open unit disk, the author considers the composition operator associated to the function \(\alpha _p\), where \(\alpha _p (z) = \frac{ p - z} {1- \overline{p} z}\). The author proves that the closure of the numerical range of \(C_ {\alpha _p} \) is an ellipse with foci at \(\pm 1\) and major axis \(\frac{2}{\sqrt{1- | p | ^2}}\). In the proof of that theorem, a result is used which is due to \textit{P. S. Bourdon} and \textit{J. H. Shapiro}, valid for operators \(T\neq \pm I\) on a Hilbert space satisfying \(T^2=I\) [J. Math. Anal. Appl. 251, 839--854 (2000; Zbl 1048.47014)].
