The paper deals with one-parameter bifurcation problems having two-dimensional kernels. A bifurcation theorem is given ensuring the existence of local bifurcating continua of solutions. This result is then specialized to the case of potential operators. Examples associated with systems of two coupled second-order elliptic partial differential equations are presented.
