Let \(H\) be a separable complex infinite-dimensional Hilbert space. A linear operator \(A\) is called universal (in the sense of G.-C. Rota) if every operator acting on this space is similar to a multiple of the restriction of \(A\) to some of its invariant subspaces. The main result of the paper roughly states the following: there exists a universal operator which commutes with a quasi-nilpotent injective compact operator with dense range. More exactly, the adjoint of some analytic Toeplitz operator on the classical Hardy space \(H^2\) is universal, and the adjoint of some weighted composition operator on \(H^2\) is also given (as the second operator mentioned in the main result). There are given applications of the obtained results to produce invariant subspaces and invariant linear manifolds for some cases.
