Consider a system \(\dot x = f(x) = A x + \cdots\) on \(\mathbb{C}^n\) and let \(\Lambda = (\lambda_1, \ldots, \lambda_n)\) where the \(\lambda_j\) are the eigenvalues of \(A\). The author proves that the system of ordinary differential equations admits a first integral on a neighborhood of the origin that is a rational function only if there exists a vector \(k\in \mathbb{Z}^n\setminus \{0\}\) such that the usual inner product of \(\Lambda\) with \(k\) is zero. This condition is applied to obtain necessary and sufficient conditions that there exist a rational first integral when \(f\) is semiquasihomogeneous.
