This paper gives a comprehensive history of terminology in particle physics up to the early 1950s. It covers the various names adopted for the elementary particles, before their number began to mushroom in what came to be known as the particle zoo. The paper pays special attention to the conceptual and science-political reasons for why certain names were preferred over others.
