Motivated by the quantum group \(GL_ q(n)\), its quantum determinant in the quantum matrix bialgebra \(M_ q(n)\), and the q-cofactor matrix with entries in \(M_ q(n)\), the author investigates matrix bialgebras with generalized determinants and cofactor matrices. In particular, he constructs a q-analogue \(A_ q^+(n)\) of the orthogonal group, and a q- analogue \(A_ q^-(n)\) of the symplectic group. He discusses embedding these groups in certain analogues of \(GL_ q(n)\), but it is not clear if they embed in \(GL_ q(n)\) itself. There are q-determinants in each case. He also discusses the possibility of the existence of a q-cofactor matrix relative to each q-determinant, but does not quite establish this. He expects it to exist, and in fact does write down its defining relations completely for \(n=3\).
