The large number \(N\) ofthe particle limit of a periodic Toda lattice is studied for the case of a family of initial data close to the equilibrium state. In order to obtain such a limit one uses the spectra of the Hill operators appearing in the study of the dynamic limit. It is shown that each of two edges of the spectra of the corresponding Jacobi matrices remain almost constant when the matrices evolve along the two limiting KdV equations. It is also proven that the Toda actions converge to the ones of KdV when appropriately renormalized. One emphasizes that the asymptotics of the Toda frequencies for large \(N\) can be obtained in a similar way.
