A translation quiver is called a tube provided it contains a simple oriented cycle and its underlying topological space is homeomorphic to \(S^ 1\times R_+\). A tube of the form \(ZA_{\infty}/r\), \(r\geq 1\), is called a smooth tube. It is known [\textit{D. Happel, C. M. Ringel}, Trans Am. Math. Soc. 274, 399-443 (1982; Zbl 0503.16024)] that the regular components of the Auslander-Reiten quiver of tame concealed artin algebras are smooth tubes. Here an important class of tubes, called coherent tubes, is investigated in detail. It is shown that coherent tubes admitting length functions are those obtained from smooth ones using an enlarging process. One proves also that all such tubes appear as components of the Auslander-Reiten quivers of tame algebras being tubular extensions of concealed tame algebras. Moreover, some interesting properties of such components are discovered.
