The second order sublinear ordinary differential equation \(x''(t)+a(t)f[x(t)]=0, t\geq t_ 0>0\) is considered, where a is a continuous function on the interval \([t_ 0,\infty)\) without any restriction on its sign, and f is a continuous function on the real line, which is continuously differentiable, except possibly at 0, and satisfies \(yf(y)>0\) and \(f'(y)>0\) for \(y\neq 0\), and \(\int^{\pm 1}_{\pm 0}[1/f(y)]dy<\infty.\) A new oscillation criterion for the above equation is presented, which includes some previous results due to \textit{I. V. Kamenev} [Differ. Uravn. 10, 246-252 (1974; Zbl 0305.34052)], \textit{T. Kura} [Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 84, 535-538 (1982; Zbl 0488.34022)], \textit{M. Kwong} and \textit{J. Wong} [SIAM J. Math. Anal. 14, 474-476 (1983; Zbl 0525.34028)] and \textit{Ch. G. Philos} [Nonlinear Anal., Theory Methods Appl. 7, 1071-1080 (1983; Zbl 0525.34028)]. Moreover, the criterion is extended to differential equations with damped term of the form \(x''(t)+q(t)x'(t)+a(t)f[x(t)]=0,\) where the function q is continuous on \([t_ 0,\infty)\). Also, sufficient conditions for all solutions of the forced equation \(x''(t)+a(t)f[x(t)]=b(t),\) where b is continuous on \([t_ 0,\infty)\), to satisfy \(\lim \inf_{t\to \infty}| x(t)| =0,\) will be given. All results of the paper include the average behavior of the integral of the coefficient a.
