We discuss the existence and uniqueness of positive solutions of certain pairs of nonlinear partial differential equations with Dirichlet boundary conditions. The equations arise in population problems with diffusion. In some cases, we decide exactly when the problem has positive solutions with both components non-trivial. In other cases, we use singular perturbation techniques to show that when such solutions exist is complicated. In addition, we use the same techniques to prove some uniqueness results (for one space dimension or for balls). More recently, the author has used bifurcation theory to show that uniqueness is complicated for some related models.
