    Seien \(N\), \(M\) vollständige Riemannsche Mannigfaltigkeiten. \(LM=\{c: [0,1]\to M; c\) absolut stetig mit quadratintegrierbarer Ableitung \(\dot c\}\). \(E: LM\to\mathbb{R}\) sei die Energiefunktion \(E(c)=\int^1_0\dot c^2(t)\,dt\). Es wird ein kommutatives Diagramm betrachtet. Dabei sei \(f\) eine differenzierbare Abbildung \(\pi (c)=(c(0),c(1))\), \(L_fM\) der pullback von \(\pi\) bezüglich \(f\) und \(E_f\) als Komposition definiert. Die Autoren beweisen folgendes Theorem A. \(E_f\) erfüllt die Bedingung (C) von Palais und Smale \(\Leftrightarrow\) Distanz \(\circ f\) ist eigentlich. Die Verfasser behandeln zwei Fälle, in denen Theorem A anwendbar ist: 1. \(f=(\text{id},A), \quad A: M\to M\) eine elliptische Isometrie. 2. \(f=(g,\text{konst}.),\quad g: N\to M\) differenzierbar und eigentlich. Im ersten Fall können sie zeigen (Theorem B), daß (mit Ausnahme der \glqq rational elliptischen\grqq{} Räume) es für einfach zuammenhängendes \(M\) stets unendlich viele \(A\)-invariante Geodätische gibt. Der zweite Fall bedeutet, daß man für die Homotopiefaser von differenzierbaren, eigentlichen Abbildungen kritische Punkt-Theorie betreiben kann.
