    Let \(f\in L^ 1_{loc}(\mathbb R)\). Then \(f\in\text{BMO}(\mathbb R)\) iff for any inverval \(I\) \[ \sup_ I\int_ I| f(y)-f_ I|\, dy/| I|=\| f\|_{\text{BMO}}<\infty, \] where \(f_ I=\int_ If(y)\,dy/| I|\). \(E^ \sigma\) denotes the class of entire functions of exponential type \(\leq\sigma\). For the Hilbert transform \(\tilde Hf\) of \(f\in E^ \sigma\cap L^ \infty(\mathbb R)\) the following inequality is known [see \textit{N. I. Akhiezer}, ``Theory of approximation'' (Russian) (1947; Zbl 0031.15704), (English translation 1956; Zbl 0072.28403)]: \[ \|\sin\pi\alpha f'+\cos\pi\alpha(\tilde Hf)'\|_ \infty\leq\sigma\| f\|_ \infty\quad\text{for }\alpha\in \mathbb R. \tag{*} \] The authors extend \((*)\) to \(f\in E^ \sigma\cap\text{BMO}(\mathbb R)\). The periodic case is also derived from the inequality on \(\mathbb R\) [cf. \textit{G. Szegö}, Schriften der Königsberger Gelehrten Gesellschaft 5, 59--70 (1928; JFM 54.0311.03)]. \((*)\) is also extended to \(L^ \varphi(\mathbb R)\) by the authors.
