Based on his concept of \(c\)-duality for convergence groups or Binz-Butzmann duality, coinciding for locally compact Abelian groups with the usual one [see \textit{H.-P. Butzmann}, Comment. Math. Helv. 47, 92-101 (1972; Zbl 0237.46026)] the author shows that the \(c\)-character groups for products, coproducts and quotient groups behave ``well'' in the category of convergence groups. The situation for subgroups is difficult (extension problems). Sufficient conditions are given to guarantee that the \(c\)-character group of a subgroup is isomorphic to a quotient of the \(c\)-character group of the whole group, and that a subgroup of a \(c\)-reflexive group is again \(c\)-reflexive. It is shown that the \(c\)-character group of a topological group is locally compact and so the second \(c\)-character group is also topological. Furthermore, it is proved that the natural mapping into the second character group is an embedding if and only if the group is locally quasi-convex, a notion introduced by \textit{W. Banaszczyk} [Additive subgroups of topological vector spaces. Lect. Notes Math., Vol. 1466 (Berlin, 1991; Zbl 0743.46002)]. As a corollary one obtains that each subgroup of a nuclear group is strongly dually embedded.
