The nontrivial question of the existence of optimal domain spaces \(X(\Omega)\) or target spaces \(Y(\Omega)\) for the Sobolev-type embedding \(W^m X(\Omega)\hookrightarrow Y(\Omega)\) has attracted attention since the renowned example of the limiting embedding \(W^1L^n(\Omega)\hookrightarrow \exp L^{n'}(\Omega)\), independently presented by \textit{N. S. Trudinger} [J. Math. Mech. 17, 473--483 (1967; Zbl 0163.36402)], \textit{S. I. Pokhozhaev} [Sov. Math., Dokl. 6, 1408--1411 (1965); translation from Dokl. Akad. Nauk SSSR 165, 36--39 (1965; Zbl 0141.30202)] and \textit{V. I. Yudovich} [Sov. Math., Dokl. 2, 746--749 (1961); translation from Dokl. Akad. Nauk SSSR 138, 805--808 (1961; Zbl 0144.14501)] in the 1960s. Many of the results deal with the optimality of the target space \(Y\) for a given domain space \(X\). The author focuses on the question of the existence of an optimal (the largest) Orlicz space \(L^A(\Omega)\) for the embedding \(W^mL^A(\Omega)\hookrightarrow Y(\Omega)\) to hold where \(Y(\Omega)\) is a given Marcinkiewicz endpoint space. The method is based on the reduction theorems (e.g. [\textit{A. Chianchi} et al., Adv. Math. 273, 568--650 (2015; Zbl 1334.46027)] and the use of the Hardy-type operator \((H^\beta_\alpha f)(t):=\int_{t^\beta}^1 f(s)s^{\alpha-1}ds\), \(t\in(0,1)\). The results are illustrated by numerous examples of optimal Sobolev embeddings for specific target spaces including various \(L^p\), \(L^p\log^q L\), \(\exp(L^p)\) type spaces on John domains or on domains from the so-called Maz'ya classes, and of Sobolev trace embeddings on domains satisfying the inner cone condition.
