The author introduces another extension of nonexpansive mappings, namely, virtually nonexpansive mappings. This new class is more general than the class of continuous asymptotically quasi-nonexpansive maps. It is shown that the fixed point set of a virtually nonexpansive selfmap of a metric space is a retract of its convergence set. Moreover, it is proved that in the case of complete metric spaces, total boundedness of the fixed point set implies that the convergence set is a \(G_{\delta}\)-set. Finally, the author discusses some criteria to obtain an explicit retraction from the domain onto the fixed point set of a nonexpansive or a quasi-nonexpansive mapping in the Banach space setting. Considerations included in this paper are illustrated by suitable examples.
