A representation of a totally pre-ordered set \(X\) is a strictly isotone function from \(X\) to another totally pre-ordered set \(Y\). In case \(X\) and \(Y\) have topologies, one considers continuous representations. Quite often, one takes the real numbers for \(Y\). The authors consider the case where \(Y \) is an important subset of the reals, for example, the irrationals. Further, it is desirable for representations to satisfy the Debreu open gap lemma, and this may not be true for all choices of \(Y\). The authors show that if \(Y\) is the set of irrationals, a weaker, but still desirable, property holds in many cases. They provide explicit constructions, and show that there are subsets of the reals for which the above is not true.
