The authors study (semi-)topological algebras which are inductive limits of a directed family \((X_\alpha)\) of Banach spaces. They call such an algebra \(A\) a strong algebra if for each \(\alpha\) there is an index \(h(\alpha)\) so that for all \(\beta\geq h{\alpha}\) one has \(\|xy\|_\beta\leq c_{\alpha,\beta}\|x\|_\alpha\|y\|_\beta\). This inequality means that the multiplication in \(A\) is separately continuous. An example of such an algebra is the algebra of germs of holomorphic functions on a compact subset \(K\) of the complex plane. It is shown that the condition ``any set in \(A\) is bounded if and only if it is bounded in some \(X_\alpha\)'' implies that the multiplication in \(A\) is jointly continuous. Also, in the case when the topology of \(A\) is the finest topology such that the maps \(X_\alpha\to A\) are continuous, the set of all invertible elements of \(A\) is open and the operation of taking an inverse is continuous. Further results concern properties of the strong algebras of holomorphic functions on a compact set, of the Wiener algebra associated to \(A\) (algebra of Fourier series with coefficients in \(A\)), and of properties of strong algebras decomposable into a direct sum of two subalgebras.
