Suppose that \(H\) is a semi-stratifiable subspace of a compact, monotonically normal space. Then \(H\) is first countable and is the union of a family of dense metrisable subspaces. Furthermore, \(H\) is metrisable if any one of the following holds: there is a \(\sigma\)-locally finite cover of \(H\) by closed metrisable subsets; there is a \(\sigma\)-locally finite cover of \(H\) by compact subsets; \(H\) is \(\sigma\)-discrete; \(H\) is scattered; \(H\) is \(\sigma\)-compact. The key to the proof is Rudin's theorem that states that any compact, monotonically normal space is the continuous image of a compact, linearly ordered topological space.
