In Fortsetzung einer Arbeit der Verf. und \textit{E. Shult} [ibid. 3, 155- 170 (1974; Zbl 0286.50004)] untersucht Verf. Polarräume mit nicht notwendig endlichem Rang: Ein Linienraum (line space) ist eine Struktur \(S=({\mathcal P},{\mathcal L})\) mit \({\mathcal L}\subset {\mathfrak P}{\mathcal P}\) und \(| \ell | \geq 2\) für \(\ell \in {\mathcal L}\). Ein \(U\subseteq {\mathcal P}\) mit \(\ell \subset {\mathcal L}\), (\(\ell \wedge U)\geq 2\) \(\Rightarrow\) \(\ell \subseteq U\) heißt Unterraum. Er heißt singulär, wenn es für \(p,q\in U\) mit \(p\neq q\) genau ein \(\ell \in {\mathcal L}\) mit \(p,q\in \ell \subseteq U\) gibt. Ein Linienraum heißt Polarraum (polar space), wenn jedes \(p\in {\mathcal P}\) mit \(p\not\in \ell \in {\mathcal L}\) zu genau einem oder allen Punkten aus \(\ell\) kollinear und kein Punkt zu allen anderen Punkten kollinear ist. Verf. zeigt, daß jeder singuläre Unterraum eines Polarraumes projektiv ist. Der Rang eines Polarraumes ist das Supremum der Dimensionen aller singulären Unterräume. Direkte Summen von Polarräumen werden in naheliegender Weise definiert. Ist ein Polarraum reduzibel, also nichttriviale direkte Summe von Polarräumen, so gibt es in ihm \(\ell \in {\mathcal L}\) mit genau zwei Punkten, die Umkehrung gilt aber nicht (im Gegensatz zu den spezielleren projektiven Räumen).
