The main result of this work is the proof of Kac's conjecture on simple graded Lie algebras of finite growth over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. It is proved that such an algebra is isomorphic either to a finite-dimensional simple Lie algebra, or a loop algebra, or a Lie algebra of Cartan type, or the Lie algebra of polynomial vector fields on the circle (Virasoro algebra). Important classes of graded Lie algebras are introduced and studied: 1) Lie algebras without roots; 2) Lie algebras of class \(\mathcal E\), i.e. infinite-dimensional algebras for which \(\dim {\mathcal L}^ -\) (or \(\dim{\mathcal L}^ +)\) is finite; 3) deep Lie algebras; 4) weakly integrable Lie algebras. It is proved that any simple graded Lie algebra exactly belongs to one of these classes. The proof of Kac's conjecture follows from the description of simple algebras of finite growth given for each class.
