Using a method of ''state models'' for calculating the Jones polynomial of a link, the author proves the topological invariance of the number of crossings in a simple alternating projection of an alternating knot. Among other things he also gives necessary conditions for an oriented alternating link to be ambient isotopic to its mirror image.
