A locally finite classical chamber system \({\mathcal C}\) is a chamber system in which each of the rank-2 residues of \({\mathcal C}\) is either a finite generalized digon or a finite classical generalized m-gon \((m=3,4,6\), or 8). In the latter case the rank-2 residues of \({\mathcal C}\) are defined over fields of some characteristic p and then p is called the characteristic of \({\mathcal C}\). The author classifies locally finite classical chamber systems \({\mathcal C}\) of rank \(\geq 3\) with connected diagram \(\Delta\) in characteristic 3 such that \({\mathcal C}\) admits a chamber transitive automorphism group with finite chamber stabilizer. The induced effective group on a rank-2 residue that is not a generalized digon acts chamber transitively on a finite classical rank-2 building and thus gives rise to a flag-transitive subgroup of the automorphism group of some finite simple rank-2 Lie-type group H. In general, as shown by \textit{G. Seitz} [Ann. Math., II. Ser. 97, 27-56 (1973; Zbl 0338.20052)], such a group contains H, but, among other exceptions, in characteristic 3 there are some ``exceptional'' flag-transitive subgroups of \(Aut(U_ 4(3))\) and \(Aut(PSp_ 4(3))\) that do not contain the corresponding Lie- type group. The result of the paper splits into two main cases according to whether there is a rank-2 residue of \({\mathcal C}\) such that the induced effective group on it is exceptional or whether there is no such rank-2 residue and in each case the possibilities for \(\Delta\) are completely determined. Examples for the case that \(\Delta\) is a bipartite graph with only double bonds and that all rank-2 residues are generalized digons or \(PSp_ 4(3)\)-quadrangles are provided while for the other diagrams appearing in the classification examples are already previously known. With results of \textit{F. Timmesfeld} [Invent. Math. 87, 603-641 (1987; Zbl 0607.20019) and J. Algebra 124, 9-59 (1989)], \textit{G. Stroth} [Geom. Dedicata 28, 93-106 (1988; Zbl 0657.51007)] and others the present paper completes the classification of locally finite classical Tits chamber systems of finite rank admitting a chamber transitive group of automorphisms such that the stabilizer of a chamber is finite.
