The theory of functional diagnosis (FD) has been developed in fair detail for continuous linear stationary systems [see \textit{L. A. Mironovskij}, Autom. Remote Control 40, 1198-1205 (1980); translation from Autom. Telemekh. 1979, No.8, 120-128 (1979; Zbl 0438.93020)]. A solution of the FD problem for stationary nonlinear dynamical systems was proposed by the authors [see Autom. Remote Control 48, No.8, 1100-1108 (1987); translation from Avtom. Telemekh. 1987, No.8, 154-164 (1987)]. This solution utilizes a special mathematical apparatus - the algebra of functions. In this paper, we extend the authors' stationary approach to nonlinear nonstationary continuous dynamical systems and formulate a FD design procedure for these systems. A further extension to a new class of objects is possible.
