The authors analyze and extend the pseudo-current method proposed by \textit{B. Marder} [ibid. 68, 48-55 (1987; Zbl 0603.65079)] for eliminating charge conservation errors in electromagnetic particle-in-cell codes. It appears that the new method is effective and efficient in removing high frequency, short wavelength errors caused by the choice of charge deposition algorithms. The proposed adaptive pseudo-current method is compared with the effects of spatial smoothing on the transverse and longitudinal components of the electromagnetic field.
