Let \(\Theta_ \pi\) be the character of an irreducible supercuspidal representation \(\pi\) of \(G = GL_ n(F)\), where \(F\) is a \(p\)-adic field of characteristic 0. \textit{J. Arthur} [Proc. Indian Acad. Sci., Math. Sci. 97, 3-19 (1987; Zbl 0652.22009)] has shown that \(\Theta_ \pi\) can be expressed in terms of weighted orbital integrals of matrix coefficients of \(\pi\), and [Duke Math. J. 56, 223-293 (1988; Zbl 0649.10020)] that weighted orbital integrals have germ expansions. Comparing this expansion for \(\Theta_ \pi\) with Howe's germ expansion for \(\Theta_ \pi\) in terms of Fourier transforms of nilpotent orbital integrals, the author expresses the coefficients in Howe's expansion in terms of weighted orbital integrals. She then computes the coefficients explicitly when \(n = 3,4\), and \(\pi\) is generic and unramified.
