Let \(A\) denote a commutative Hopf algebra over a commutative ring \(R\). In the paper under review the author shows that the Hochschild cohomology algebra of \(A\) is (as a graded \(R\)-algebra) isomorphic to the tensor product (over \(R\)) of \(A\) and the extension algebra of the trivial \(A\)-module if \(A\) is a finitely generated projective \(R\)-module. The proof is conceptual and very short; indeed, it follows from a more general result on the behavior of extension algebras under ground ring extension. In the special case of the group algebra of a finite commutative group this description of the Hochschild cohomology algebra was previously established by \textit{T. Holm} [Commun. Algebra 24, No. 6, 1957-1969 (1996; Zbl 0853.16016)] for a ground field and by \textit{C. Cibils} and \textit{A. Solotar} [Arch. Math. 68, No. 1, 17-21 (1997; Zbl 0872.16004)] for an arbitrary commutative ground ring.
