Let \(A\) be an algebra of type \(\Delta\). We say that \(A\) satisfies a multiequation \((\alpha_i=\beta_i)_{i\in I}\) (here \(\alpha_ i=\beta_i\) is an equation over \(\Delta\) for every \(i\in I\)) provided that for every interpretation of variables in \(A\) there exists precisely one \(i\in I\) such that the computation of \(\alpha_i\) and \(\beta_i\) in \( A\) yields the same value. Then a multivariety is the class of algebras satisfying a multiequation. This paper gives a categorical characterization of multivarieties. It is proved that multivarieties generalize multialgebraic categories and a necessary and sufficient condition to a multivariety is given (it says that a multivariety has effective equivalence relations) to be categorically equivalent with a multialgebraic category.
