The authors study the position and the type of singularities formed by solutions to general analytic nonlinear differential systems when an irregular singular point of the system is approached along an anti-Stokes direction. Placing the singularity of the system at infinity, they look at equations of the form \(y'= f(x^{-1}, y)\) with \(f\) analytic in a neighborhood of \((0, 0)\in \mathbb{C}\times \mathbb{C}^{m}\), with the genericity assumption that \(x=\infty\) is a rank one singular point. Their method generalizes a previous one of the first author [Commun. Pure Appl. Math. 52, 461--478 (1999; Zbl 0910.34003)] and uses a two-scale asymptotic expansion of the form \(y\sim \widetilde{F} (x;\xi(x))= \sum_{m=0}^{\infty} x^{-m}F_{m} (\xi(x))\), with \(\xi(x)= C\exp(-\lambda x) x^{\alpha}.\) As examples a nonintegrable Abel equation and the Painlevé equations \(P_1\) and \(P_2\) are considered.
