The following system of hyperbolic second order differential equations \[ L_{ij} (\partial_x, \partial_t)u_j (x,t)+G_i(x,t)=0,\quad i,j=1,\dots, M,\quad (x,t) \in\mathbb{R}^{N+1}, \] \[ L_{ij} (\partial_x, \partial_t)= C_{ij}^{ml} \partial_m \partial_l- \partial_{ij} \partial_t^2,\;i,j=1,2, \dots,M,\;m,l=1, \dots, N,\;C_{ij}^{ml}= C_{ij}^{lm}= C_{ji}^{ml}, \] in the space of distributions \(D_M'(\mathbb{R}^{N+1})\) is considered. The article concentrates on the construction of a fundamental solution for this system -- the Green matrix -- defined as the solution \(U_{jk}(x,t)\) of \(L_{ij} (\partial_x, \partial_t) U_{jk}(x,t)+ \delta_{ik} \delta(x,t)=0,\;i,j,k=1, \dots,M\). The Green matrix is constructed in two cases: the characteristic equation for the hyperbolic system has simple or multiple real roots. Fourier transform methods are used.
