Let \(M\) be a simply-connected irreducible Riemannian symmetric space. A connected submanifold \(S\) of \(M\) is called a symmetric submanifold if for any point \(p\in S\), there exists a unique isometry \(t_p\) on \(M\) such that \(t(p)=p\), \(t_p(S)=S\), \(dt_p(x)=-x\), for \(x\in T_pS\), \(t_p(x)=x\), \(x\in N_pS\). Here \(T_pS\) and \(N_pS\) are the tangent and normal spaces, respectively of \(S\) at \(p\). The author gives a necessary and sufficient condition for \(S\) to be minimal. From that, he obtains a complete classification of non-minimal symmetric submanifolds in compact symmetric spaces.
