Given a metric space \((X,d)\), the hyperspace \(\mathcal{H}(X)\) is the set of all closed, bounded, and non-degenerate subsets of \(X\). The article under review is concerned with the problem of hyperbolizing \(\mathcal{H}(X)\), that is, constructing appropriate metrics on \(X\) for which \(\mathcal{H}(X)\) is Gromov hyperbolic. \textit{Z. Ibragimov} [Mich. Math. J. 60, No. 1, 215--239 (2011; Zbl 1220.30075)] constructed a metric \(d_{\mathcal{H}}\) on such that \((\mathcal{H}(X),d_{\mathcal{H}})\) is Gromov hyperbolic and homeomorphic to \((\mathcal{H}(X),d_H)\) where \(d_{H}\) is the Hausdorff metric. The first result (Theorem 1) generalizes Ibragimov's result by replacing \(d_H\) by some other metric \(D_H\) on \(\mathcal{H}(X)\) and moreover showing that if \(D_H\) is Ptolemaic then the space \((\mathcal{H}(X),d_\mathcal{H})\) is asymptotically \(\mathrm{PT}_{-1}\). The second conclusion of Theorem 1 is generalized in Theorem 2, for the set \(\mathscr{F}(X)\) of all closed non-degenerate subsets of \(X\), answering a question of Ibragimov [loc. cit.]. Definitions and preliminary results are given in Section 2 while the proofs of the main results are given in Section 3.
