Let \({\mathcal L}(H)\) be the algebra of all bounded linear operators on a separable complex Hilbert space \(H\). For an operator \(T\in{\mathcal L}(H)\), let \(\text{lag}(T)\) be the subalgebra of \({\mathcal L}(H)\) generated by \(T\) and the identity operator, and \(\text{com}(T)\) be the commutant of \(T\). A subalgebra of \({\mathcal L}(H)\) is called strongly compact if each of its bounded subsets is relatively compact in the strong operator topology. In this nicely written paper, the author investigates the strong compactness of \(\text{lag}(T)\) and \(\text{com}(T)\) when \(T\) is either a composition operator induced on the Hardy space \(H^2\) by a linear fractional self-map of the unit disc or the adjoint of a composition operator or a multiplier or the Cesàro operator.
